The Festival de Cannes traces its history back in 1932. When on the suggestion of historian Philippe Erlanger with the support of the British, the Americans and the then French National Education Minister Jean Zay proposed this cinematic international event.This award was started in parallel to Venice Film Festival in which France refused to participate.The first international event was proposed to be held at Cannes in 1939 but the World War II was on so the event was postponed.The first festival was held in the month of September year 1946 In 1954, Special Jury Prize was introduced. In 1955, Grand Prix was renamed as Palme d’Or. Dolores Del Rio was the first female member of the jury for the official at the film festival in 1957. In 1962, the French Syndicate Of Cinema Critics founded International Critic’s Week for Cannes Film Festival. In 1965 Olivia De Havilland became the first female to be nominated as the President for it. While in 1966 Sofia Loren became the President of this international film festival.

INDIAN CINEMA AND CANNES FILM FESTIVAL.

In 1946, Neecha Nagar the movie directed by Chetan Anand was awarded the Grand Prix. The Neecha Nagar became first such Indian film to attain global recognition. The award which later became the Palme d’ Or. Later in 1950, Mr. Anand became the first jury member from India.

In 1952, V. Shantaram directed Amar Bhoopali. The movie was nominated for the Palme d’ Or but fetched the Best Sound Recording award. Then the music director was Vasant Desai the songs were sung by Mangeshkar sister’s.

In 1955, Raj Kapoor’s Boot Polish was awarded The Special Distinction Award.

In 1956, Satyajit Ray won the Palme d’ Or for his movie Pather Panchali. Same year Rajbhans Khanna’s Gotama The Buddha, a documentary won the Jury Prize.

In 1982, Mrinal Sen was a member of jury at the Cannes Film Festival.His movie Kharij won the Jury Prize. His another classic Khandhar is a part of Cannes Classic Screening in 2010.

In 1988, Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay won the Camera d’Or and the Audience Prize. In 1989, Piravi was nominated the Camera d’Or category.

In 1991, Deepa Mehta’s Sam & Me won the Camera d’Or. Marana Simhasanam a malayalam film by Murali Nair, won the Camera d’Or in 1999.

In 1997, The Sheep Thief a short film directed by Asif Kapadia won the Cinefondation Award. Another short film A Very Very Silent Movie, directed by Manish Jha won the Jury Award in 2002.

In 2003, Aishwarya Rai became the first Indian woman to be a member of the international jury at the Cannes Film Festival. Followed by Sharmila Tagore in 2009 and Gitanjali Rao in 2011.

Year 2013 was bit different for Indian Cinema. Amitabh Bachchan played a cameo in the movie The Great Gatsby that was screened on the opening day of the film festival. In the same festival Vidhya Balan and Nandita Das were the members of the jury.

INDIAN FILMS THAT WERE NOMINATED FOR PALME d’Or.

Raj kapoor’s Awara was nominated in 1953. Parash Pathar a classical bengali film from Satyajit Ray was nominated in 1958. M.S. Sathyu’s Garm Hava was nominated in 1974. In 2007 Veyil directed by Vasanthabalan became the first tamil movie to be screened at the Cannes.

72nd FESTIVAL de CANNES.

The 72nd Cannes Film Festival was held between 14-25 May in France at Cannes.The Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu presided as the president of the jury. The other members of jury are Elle Fanning (Actress) , Maimouna N’ Diaye (Actress and Comedian), Kelly Reichardt (Director and Screenwriter), Alice Rohrwacher (Director,Editor and Screenwriter), Enki Bilal(Book Creator,Comic Artist, and Film Director), Robin Campillo (Screenwriter,Editor and Film Director ), Yorgos Lanthimos(Director,Producer and Screenwriter.), Pawel Pawlekowski(Film Maker). The Parasite directed by Bong Joon-Ho became the first korean film to win Palme d’ Or.
