The inaugural Cricket World Cup was played in 1975. The host was England. India and Pakistan made an impact in the first four editions of the tournament. Both the teams till now had defeated Australia, England, West Indies, East Africa, and Zimbabwe at some stages in the mega sports event. India became the World Champions in 1983 and Pakistan made to semi-finals in 1979, 1983, 1987 and they finally won the World Championship in 1992.

FIRST INDO-PAK MATCH IN A WORLD CUP.

It was the 16th match of the Group Stage of the tournament. The most anticipated match was played at the Sydney Cricket Ground. A day-night match. Pakistan won the toss and put India to bat first. The total Indian score was 216. Sachin Tendulkar scored 54 runs and took 1 wicket too. It was Sachin’s first half-century in the World Cup. Then he made 81 and 84 runs against Zimbabwe and New Zealand. India defeated Pakistan in the match. Amir Sohail made 62 runs and Mushtaq Ahmed claimed 3 wickets.

THE SECOND QUARTERFINAL- 1996 WORLD CUP INDIA Vs PAKISTAN.

It was the second quarter-final at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium Bengaluru. A day-night match. Pakistan won the toss and decided to bowl first. Before the match Wasim Akram the captain of the Pakistani team got injured and Amir Sohail was to led his side. The Indian captain was Mohammad Azharuddin. Batting first India put a total of 287 runs. In the death overs, Ajay Jadeja slammed Waqar Younis for 22 runs in an over. Navjot Singh Sidhu was the Man Of The Match he made 93 runs, Venkatesh Prasad and Anil Kumble took 3 wickets each.

ICC WORLD CUP 1999-INDIA-PAKISTAN MATCH. AT THE BACKDROP OF THE KARGIL WAR.

It was India’s second match of the Super Sixes. The venue was the Old Trafford, Manchester. Pakistan led by Wasim Akram, won the toss the third time in a row and put India to bat. As we say history repeats itself India again defeated Pakistan. Batting first India put a total of 227 runs. Rahul Dravid and Mohammad Azharuddin made valuable contributions with the bat. The former scored 61 and the later made 59 runs. Venkatesh Prasad was the Man Of The Match as he claimed 5 wickets.

2003-THE BATTLEGROUND JOHANNESBURG

South Africa was a co-host along with Zimbabwe and Kenya. India and Pakistan met for the fourth time in the World Cup and this time the venue was the Super Sports Park, Centurion. Waqar Younis won the toss and elected to bat first. Opener Saeed Anwar hammered the Indian bowlers all around the ground and scored 101. The total was 273. Indian openers Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag made a blistering start that made the chase easy. For the first time in the World Cup, Virender Sehwag was at the non-striker’s end. Man Of The Match was Sachin Tendulkar, he just fell two short of his another century.

2011 WORLD CUP-SEMI FINAL INDIA Vs PAKISTAN.

It was the second semi-final of the tournament a day-night match. The stage was set and the venue was I.S. Bindra stadium Mohali. For the first time, the toss turned in favour of Mahendra Singh Dhoni the skipper of the Indian team. He decided to bat first. Indian opener Virendra Sehwag hammered Umar Gul all around the ground. India failed capitalised on kind of opening the team got but still, they were able to score 260 runs. It was a tricky score. The entire Pakistan team was bowled out for 231 runs. It was Pakistan’s fifth consecutive defeat in the World Cup. The Man Of The Match Sachin Tendulkar. Wahab Riaz claimed 5 Indian Wickets and Misbah-ul Haq was highest run-getter for his team Pakistan which was headed by Shahid Afridi.

2015- SIXTH CONSECUTIVE DEFEAT OF PAKISTAN.

India defeated Pakistan for the sixth time in the World Cup. A day-night match played at Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, Australia. Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat first. The run machine Virat Kohli made a century and was the Man Of The Match. Opener Shikhar Dhawan made 73 and Suresh Raina’s 74 were two other important contributions from the bat. India put a total of 300 runs. Sohail Khan, Pakistan’s paceman took 5 Indian wickets that included the wickets of Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Misbah-ul-Haq, the skipper of Pakistan was the highest scorer from his team he made 76 runs.

  • Till now India has won all the six matches. Sachin Tendulkar is the only player to have featured five World cup wins against Pakistan.
  • Sachin Tendulkar is the only batsman who has won three Man of The Matches Award against Pakistan in the World Cups(1992,2003 and 2011).
  • Venkatesh Prasad and Wahab Riaz are the highest wicket-takers in a match. Both of them have claimed 5 wickets in a match.
  • Mohammad Azharuddin captained India thrice in World Cup against Pakistan which is also a record. followed by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, he led the national team twice in ICC World Cup.
  • Sachin Tendulkar is the highest runs getter between both the teams. He had scored 313 runs. Whereas Saeed Anwar is the leading scorer for Pakistan against India in the World Cups. His aggregate is 185 runs
  • Virat Kohli holds the record of highest individual score of 107 runs. Whereas Saeed Anwar 101 runs are Pakistan’s highest individual score against India in the World Cups.
  • Pakistan has won 4 tosses out of 6.
