THE FIRST CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY OF BRITISH INDIA.

M .N. Roy, the first communist leader of India mooted the idea of the Constituent Assembly for the making of the constitution. In the year 1935 for the first time, Indian National Congress demanded the formation of the constituent assembly. The demand for the first time was accepted in August Offer of 1940. Though the Cripps Mission of 1942 failed. It also supported the framing of the Indian Constitution by an elected assembly of the Indians. The demand was fulfilled in 1946’s Cabinet Mission Plan, as the formation constituent was one of its provisions. The total members of the assembly were 389 out of which 296 were indirectly elected from British India and 93 were nominated by the Princely States. On 9th December 1946, the Constituent Assembly met for the first time with 207 members including 9 women in then Constituent Hall now the Central Hall of the Parliament. Dr Sachchiananda Sinha was its first President later replaced by Dr Rajendra Prasad and H.C Mukherjee was Vice President. Sir B.N Rau was an advisor to the Constitutional Assembly.
