GLOBAL HUNGER INDEX 2020

INDIA RANKS 94 IN THE 2020 GLOBAL HUNGER INDEX. THOUGH INDIA HAS IMPROVED IN CHILD MORTALITY RATES WHICH IS NOW 3.7% AND IN UNDERNOURISHMENT WHICH IS ABOUT 14% OF THE TOTAL POPULATION.

The Global Hunger Index (GHI) measures hunger at the global, national, and regional level. For the 2020 report, the data from 132 countries were assessed. Only 107 countries provided sufficient data. For each country, the GHI is based on the four indicators. These indicators are-

  • UNDERNOURISHMENT- The percentage of the population that is undernourished.
  • CHILD WASTING-The percentage of children below the age of five are reflecting acute undernutrition.
  • CHILD STUNTING- Children under the age of five reflecting the stunted growth.
  • CHILD MORTALITY- The mortality rate under the age of five.
  • BY USING THE ABOVE FOUR INDICATORS THE GHI SCORE IS CALCULATED AND CLASSIFIED AS LOW, MODERATE AND SERIOUS HUNGER.
