THE CLASSIFICATION OF VOLCANOES
- The volcanoes are classified on the basis of-
- The Mode Of Eruption
- Explosive Eruption or Central Eruption types of volcanoes the eruption occurs through a central pipe.
- Example- Hawaiian, Strombolian, Vulcanian, Vesuvian and Pelean Types.
- Quiet Eruption or Fissure Eruption types of volcanoes occur along a long fracture, fault or fissure through which magma comes out.
- Example- The Laki Fissure in Iceland.
- Explosive Eruption or Central Eruption types of volcanoes the eruption occurs through a central pipe.
- The Periodicity Of Eruption
- Active Volcanoes– These volcanoes constantly eject lava and other materials.
- Examples-Mt. Stromboli ( the lighthouse of the Mediterranean sea), Mt.Etna and Mt. Cotapaxi.
- Dormant Volcanoes– These volcanoes became quiet after eruptions. In the near future, they may or may not be active.
- Examples- Mt.Vesuvius, Mt. Fuji, Mt. Kilimanjaro
- Extinct Volcanoes– These are dead volcanoes.
- Examples- Mt. Huascaran (the highest mountain in Peru), Mt. Buninyong, Tamu Massif.

TYPES OF EXPLOSIVE ERUPTING VOLCANOES
TYPE OF EXPLOSIVE ERUPTING VOLCANOES | IMPORTANT FEATURE/S | EXAMPLE |
HAWAIIAN | LAVA IS LESS VISCOUS. GASES LIBERATED QUETLY. NON VIOLENT. LONG GLASSY THREAD OF RED LAVA KNOWN AS PELE’S HAIRS.(PELE IS HAWAIIAN GODDESS OF FIRE) | Mt.KILAUEA |
STROMBOLIAN | EXPLOSIVE ACTIVITY MILD. THE ERUPTIONS ARE RHYTHMIC. SOMETIMES INTERRUPTED BY LONG INTERVALS. THE VOLCANOES ARE NAMED AFTER THE STROMBOLI, VOLCANO OF LIPARI ISLAND NEAR SICILY | Mt. EREBUS |
VULCANIAN | NAMED AFTER VOLCANO OF LIPARI ISLANDS. EXPLOSION OCCURS WITH GREAT FORCE AND INTENSITY BUT IRREGULAR. | Mt. St. HELENS |
VESUVIAN | MORE OR LESS SIMILAR TO VULCANIAN AND STROMBOLIAN TYPE. EXPLOSION VIOLENT. | Mt. VESUVIUS |
PELEEAN | NAMED AFTER THE PELE VOLCANO OF MARTINIQUE ISLANDS CARIBEAN SEA. MOST VIOLENT. | Mt. KRAKATOA |
