RAJENDRA GOEL- A RANJI GIANT PASSED AWAY

Rajendra Goel, former cricketer and the State Bank of India employee represented Haryana cricket team at the first-class level. A left-arm spinner made his Ranji debut in 1958-59. Represented the cricket team of Patiala that later became Southern Punjab. In 1963 he played for Delhi and in 1973 he was a team member of the Haryana cricket team. With 750 wickets at Ranji level, Goel never got a chance to play for India. In 1978-79 Ranji season with his 418th wicket Goel became the highest wicket-taker at the first-class level. Earlier this record was held by former spinner V.V. Kumar. His 600 wicket came during 1983-84 Ranji season and his victim was Chandrakant Pandit. Rajendra Goel retired from the first-class cricket in 1985. In his last Ranji season i.e 1984-85 he took 39 wickets. At the time of his retirement, his total wicket tally was 750. But he and Padmakar Shivalkar with 589 wickets the second to Goel never got a chance to represent India in Test Cricket. Srinivas Venkataraghavan with 530 wickets at Ranji level ranks third.
