INFANT MORTALITY RATE IN INDIA- A REPORT
The Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is defined as the death of infants per thousand live births in a year in a region at a particular time. The IMR provides a raw estimation of the overall health scenario of a region/country. As per the Sample Registration Bulletin, 2018 released by Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India. At present, IMR 32 infant deaths per thousand live births, for the year 2018 it is about one-fourth as compared to 1971 ie 129 infant deaths per thousand live births. In the last decade, IMR for rural India has witnessed a decline of about 35% and about 32% in urban India. In the last ten years, the IMR at pan India level has come down to 32 from 50. Similarly, there was a decline in IMR in the rural areas it came down to 36 from 55 and for urban areas, it changed to 23 from 34. Though there is declined in the IMR overs the last decades, still one in every 31 infants die within the first year of their life at the National level. One in every 28 infants in rural areas and one in every 43 infants in urban areas still die within one year of life.
