INDIA RANKS 7TH AMONG 163 COUNTRIES IN THE GLOBAL TERRORISM INDEX. A REPORT PUBLISHED BY INSTITUTE FOR ECONOMICS AND PEACE.

The Global Terrorism Index is an annual report. The report is developed and published by an Australian based think tank- The Institute For Economics And Peace. It is a non-profit organization with headquarters in Sydney. The institute has 12 full-time staff, 12 equivalent full-time staff, and 6 volunteers. In the rankings, the United States Of America Ranks-22, Russia-37, Germany-44, France-36, the United Kingdom-28, China-42.


KEY FINDINGS OF 2019’S REPORT

  • The total number of deaths from terrorism declined for the 4th consecutive year in 2018, falling 15.2% to 15,952 deaths.
  • Nine of the ten countries most impacted by terrorism improved.
  • Despite the fall in the total number of deaths, the number of countries affected by terrorism remains high.
  • Afghanistan had the largest deterioration of the deaths from terrorism increased by 59% from the previous year.
  • For the first time since 2013, Iraq was not the country most impacted by terrorism.
  • Iraq and Somalia expressed the largest falls in the deaths from terrorism.
  • The global economic impact of terrorism in 2018 amounted to $ 33 billion.

CRITERIA FOR GLOBAL TERRORISM INDEX

  • The incident must be intentional.
  • The incident must entail some level of violence or the threat of violence.
  • The perpetrators of the incident must be a sub-national actor.

THE GLOBAL TERRORISM INDEX SCORING SYSTEM

  • The total number of terrorist incidents in a given year.
  • The total number of fatalities caused by terrorism in a given year.
  • The total number of injuries caused by terrorism in a given year.
  • The approximate level of the total property damage from terrorist incidents in a given year.
