The 72nd World Health Assembly was held in Geneva. The Dr. Lee Jong Wook Memorial Prize For Public Health was given. Dr. Balram Bhargava, a clinician, innovator, researcher, trainer founding editor in chief of the British Medical Journal Innovations. Dr. Bhargava, the Director General of Indian Council Of Medical Research shared the prize with Myanmar’s the Mobile Health Clinic an initiative of the Ministry Of Health And Sports Myanmar.

Dr. Lee Jong Wook-The Vaccine Czar.

Dr. Lee Jong Wook was the first South Korean to be the Director General of the World Health Organization between 2003-2006. Born in Seoul on 12th of April 1945 a graduate in Medicine from Seoul National University. He did his Masters in the Public Health from the University of Hawaii. Dr. Wook worked for the World Health Organization for 23 years.In 1983 he started his career fighting leprosy in Fiji he also worked on variety of projects. One of the projects was the Global Programme for Vaccines and Immunizations and Stop the tuberculosis. Later he promoted the vaccination of children against diseases. He was among the 100 most influential people in the world a survey conducted by Time magazine in 2004. He died in 2006, May 22.In his memory the Dr. Lee Jong Wook Memorial Award was instituted in 2008. This yearly prize consist of a plaque and a prize money which will not exceed US$ 100,000.Every year, national health administrations and former prize recipients submit nominations. The nominations are reviewed by the selection panel. In its January session, the WHO Executive Board,establishes an interview panel to interview the nominated candidates as suggested by the selection panel.
