WORLD DRUG REPORT BY UNDOC

According to the World Drug Report released by the United Nations Office On Drugs and Crime, India ranks fourth in terms of opium seized. Iran topped the rankings. The opium is illegally produced nearly in 50 countries and about 97% of its production comes from Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Therefore, Asia has emerged as the largest producer of illegal opium it accounts for more than 90% of the production. On the contrary, Asia is also the biggest consumer of illegal opium. According to the report, Afganistan alone produces nearly 84% of the opium and it is supplied to Europe, West Asia, South Asia and Africa. The other shareholders in terms of opium production at the global level are Myanmar 7%, Mexico 6% and Laos, Colombia and Guatemala 1% each. The report says that the production of illegal opium has declined by 17% in 2018 and by 30% in 2019. In 2018, 704 tonnes of opium was seized.
